Competitor Group and REI Announce Partnership

• REI to become title sponsor of Muddy Buddy Adventure Series
• Outdoor retailer will serve as presenting sponsor of TriRock Triathlon Series

Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), the leading active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company, has announced a three-year partnership with REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), one of the nation’s largest outdoor gear and apparel retailers. In 2013, REI will become the title partner of the Muddy Buddy Adventure Series, as well as presenting sponsor of the TriRock Triathlon Series.

REI Muddy Buddy series are adventure races that invite teams of two to choose between the traditional REI Muddy Buddy Bike & Run, in which participants switch off running and biking, and the REI Muddy Buddy Run, which keeps teams together as they navigate on foot. Courses are lined with challenging obstacles and creative costumes are encouraged.

Each event’s signature finale involves both teammates crawling through a 50-foot-long mud pit before crossing the finish line together.  REI Muddy Buddy is a family friendly event, welcoming kids ages four to 11 to join in the Mini Muddy Buddy. Leading up to the events, REI stores will also host Mud Run, Bike Maintenance and Outdoor Fitness Basics classes taught by REI instructors to help athletes prepare to participate.

The TriRock Triathlon Series presented by REI has grown into one of the nation’s premier multisport series, taking place in eight cities across the country. in 2013.  The triathlon events feature Olympic and Sprint distances with entertainment positioned along the race route, offering a unique race experience unlike anything else the industry has to offer. Participants just testing the waters of the triathlon experience can also sign up as a three-person relay team, taking on either the swim, bike or run component.  REI will host educational programs to support participants, including a TriRock class led by triathletes and on-going Triathlon Basics classes led by REI experts.

In both events, participants receive a finishers medal, t-shirt and for those over 21, access to a post-race beer garden.

Within three years of his diagnosis with aggressive prostate cancer, Dick Treat lost his battle to cancer at the age of 66—leaving behind a wife, two sons, two daughters and five grandsons. Dick’s story is not uncommon. In fact, in 2012, more than 28,000 other men will lose their life to prostate cancer.

Dick’s diagnosis came at a pivotal time for his family—his oldest daughter was just married, his sons were expanding their families with children and his youngest, Katie, had just graduated college. These important milestones in his children’s lives led Dick and his wife to keep the severity of his disease quiet until they heard the same results from multiple doctors. And for the next two years, the Treat family spent quality time together, taking family vacations to some of Dick’s favorite destinations and enjoying life with one another. “As awful as it was, he remained so positive—he didn’t want to let anyone worry about him,” adds Katie.

After his passing, Katie was left wondering, what could she do to help educate men and raise awareness for a disease that affects 1 in 6 American men?

Though not an avid runner, Katie ran her first marathon shortly after college and played soccer her entire life. Her dad was always at her practices and games, rain or shine. After signing up for her second marathon and participating as an Athlete for a Cure last September, Katie looked for opportunities to continue raising awareness for the cause. Katie is now a team captain for Athletes for a Cure at the San Jose Muddy Buddy and will be wearing light blue for her dad, the official awareness color of prostate cancer.

Katie is also the aunt to five boys—a role she takes very seriously. Dollars raised through the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Athletes for a Cure will no doubt have an impact on these boys’ lives, “I know the money raised today has the potential to save their life.”

With supporters like Katie, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Athletes for a Cure are raising awareness and funds for the fight against prostate cancer.

It was not an easy Muddy Buddy; the temperature was at the top of the charts, over 90 degrees, and it was, admittedly, the hardest hill set in the 2012 series. But that did not stop the boys from blazing the trail and cooling off in the Mud Pit to wait for the next team to cross the finish line… over 1 minute later!

Keep your eye out for these two boys, we have a feeling they will continue to set records for years to come.
